Portage Glacier is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Alaska. A few years ago, a new visitor center was constructed at the end of the lake with the glacier practically right in front of it. Since then the glacier has receded to the point where it is barely even visible from the visitor center. Visitors need to take a boat or drive up the road to get a view of it. It is located on the road from Whittier to Anchorage, just below the long tunnel. Byron Glacier is a short hike from that area.
