Nome is a town on the northern part of the Bering Sea. It grew up during the great gold rush, and still has quite a bit of gold on the beaches. Nome is also the terminus of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, held each winter commemorating the historic race to get diphtheria serum there during an outbreak one winter.
