This statue of George Washington sits in the rotunda in the State Capitol in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was designed in 1816 by Italian sculpture Antonio Canova. He had never seen Washington and used another bust of Washington as his inspiration. The original statue was destroyed in a fire in 1831, but in 1970, another copy was created from the original plaster cast.
