I visited in Moscow while Russia was still the Soviet Union. But things were changing. Prior to this, the lines to Lenin's Mausoleum were many blocks long. When I went, it was less than a block long. But the line to the new McDonalds, the largest one in the world, were twelve blocks long. I thought that was very symbolic.
