The Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge preserves some of the undeveloped land along the Maine Coast, including some tidal bird habitat. There are well-maintained trails to explore. Rachel Carson was instrumental in starting the environmental movement in the early 1960s and among other things led to the banning of DDT.
