The Peter and Paul Fortress located on Hare Island in the Neva River of St Petersburg, Russia, was founded in approximately 1730 to protect the city from the Swedish. It has also served as a prison, a burial place for many tsars and other famous Russians. Now it functions as a museum and mint.
