Svalbard is the most northerly inhabited location on earth. It is about half-way between the North Cape of Norway and the North Pole. Interestingly, when I talked with some of the people there, I found out that they prefer the winters over the summers, because the snow and ice melt during the summer making travel much more difficult. Longyearbyen is the main town, and is mostly a mining town. Both Russia and Norway have claimed this area.
