I think Miyajima is my favorite place in Japan, and certainly one of the most beautiful. It is most famous for its vermillion 'floating' Torii gate, but also has a very interesting shrine, temple, pagoda, and village. It is on an island just off the coast of Hiroshima. The deer are sacred and as such are everywhere, and so tame as to cause some problems for visitors.
