The Iditarod is the most famous sled dog race in the world and runs from Willow, north of Anchorage, all the way to Nome, re-enacting the historic run to get diphtheria vaccine to Nome in the days before flight. Just making it to the end is an impressive achievement. The ceremonial start takes place in the city of Anchorage, and the race actually starts the next day in Willow.
