I have been to this castle several times. Unfortunately, on this most recent trip we arrived too late to go inside. Neuschwanstein is the Swan Castle, one of Prince Ludwig's creations, designed in the mid 1800s as a fantasy operaland. The inside is still unfinished today. Ludwig is often criticised for having spent nearly the entire Bavarian treasury building his fantasy castles, but in his defense, they have brought back far more money in return just in tourism revenue to the area. And they were built during a time when most all other European countries were spending huge fortunes on defense and waging wars, and Bavaria was mostly at peace during this time.
